Challenge
P&R Metals worked with two local fabricators in determining the right product for the North and South end zone scoreboards at Mississippi State University. The issue was having a grating that is lightweight but strong enough to span a safe distance without additional structural steel. The other issue was ventilation due to all of the heat generated from the video board.
Solution
P&R Metals suggested going with 19W4 (1" x 1/8") carbon steel light-duty welded bar grating. This grating can clear span up to 4' 0" for pedestrian loads. The grating was used on 5 levels per scoreboard and also painted black. Once construction was completed, the entire structure was shrouded.
