Birmingham, Ala. — April 05, 2019 — P&R Metals opened its doors in Birmingham, Ala. in March of 1999, during a period of strong economic growth. The next year, the Nasdaq Composite stock market index peaked on March 10, 2000, before ultimately falling to its low on October 9, 2002 – dropping 78% from its height. While not a dot-com, P&R Metals was exposed during its infancy to the economic weakness felt widely across the nation.
“Setting up shop in Birmingham has helped us face a few economic headwinds over our 20-year history,” says James Robinson, president of P&R Metals. “The big advantages we’ve encountered here at home created the tailwinds we needed for our business to thrive.”
P&R Metals first expanded its campus in 2002. The latest expansion was in 2016– which increased its campus footprint to double the original size. Over its 20-year history, the company has created custom fabricated industrial product for its customers across the nation, including the fulfillment of international requests. P&R Metals has supplied materials which helped enrich Railroad Park, The Birmingham Zoo, Cape Canaveral, Disney World, and multiple locations for Southern Company affiliates.
“The cost-advantage Birmingham provides has helped fuel our growth. From the start, we’ve had a good opportunity to compete with the most established players in the industry. There are some really skilled welders and fabricators in the area who have made a great addition to our team. We’ve been able to expand our footprint to meet customer needs at a cost most would envy. Birmingham has made the difference,” says Robinson.
